Badb, Nemain, and Macha together are the three crows who make up the imposing Irish Goddess, The Morrigan. In Twa Black Corbies these sisters inhabit three inner books: the first of retold tales and histories, the second of dark surreal fiction, the third is a book about Death collecting its children throughout the centuries – a kind of Danse Macabre. Stories within are: the history of the werewolf, Peter Stubbe as told through the eyes of his horrified daughter; another is of a young archaeologist who finds herself drawn eerily and maternally to what lies beneath the peat bog on an excavation; plus a murderer who over a Stuart Yuletide in Scotland is confronted by frighteningly costumed mummers who commit him to play a game of dice for his life against the wail of a banshee.
